The Media Education Centre, as an organization with consultative status in UN ECOSOC, invites all organizations with this status to cooperate in advancing international economic and social development. UN ECOSOC, established in 1946, plays a crucial role in coordinating the work of 15 specialized UN agencies, their functional commissions, and five regional commissions.

The Special Meeting of the Economic and Social Council on Artificial Intelligence (AI) will take place on Tuesday, 6 May 2025 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the ECOSOC Chamber at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The meeting will bring together Member States, UN system experts, private sector leaders, innovators, and civil society stakeholders to follow up on the outcomes of the Summit of the Future, including the Global Digital Compact. It will showcase the potential for AI to accelerate sustainable development in the Global South, paying special attention to the role of strategic investments, partnerships, and international cooperation in addressing foundational needs and capacity development.
Key functions of ECOSOC include:
- Policy Dialogue: It serves as a forum for discussing global issues related to economic and social development.
- Coordination of Work: ECOSOC ensures effective collaboration among various UN agencies engaged in economic and social matters.
- Recommendations: It formulates recommendations for member states and the UN General Assembly on pressing economic, social, and environmental issues.
- Research and Reporting: ECOSOC commissions and agencies conduct vital research and report on a range of global issues, providing insights that inform policymaking.
ECOSOC holds its annual session in July in New York and comprises several functional commissions addressing specific areas such as social development, population and development, and sustainable development. Additionally, it hosts the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development to review the progress made in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
