Digital literacy and AI are powerful tools that can significantly accelerate progress towards the SDGs. However, realizing their full potential necessitates addressing the ethical and societal challenges they present. Equitable access to digital literacy education, responsible AI development, robust data protection measures, and proactive mitigation of negative impacts are critical to ensuring that digital technologies and AI contribute to a truly sustainable and inclusive future for all.

The BEACON SPLASH project addresses critical challenges facing the Planet by linking issues of digital literacy, youth engagement, social inclusion, and capacity building. By prioritizing equitable access to quality digital and AI literacy education, the project fosters a more informed, engaged, and inclusive citizenry, ultimately contributing to sustainable peace and social harmony across European Cities of Peace.
Education for sustainable development (ESD) is a crucial solution for addressing the challenges related to digital literacy, AI, and the achievement of the SDGs. However, it’s not the only solution, and its effectiveness depends on its implementation.
The BEACON SPLASH project aims to foster sustainable peace leadership and social harmony across European Cities of Peace. This initiative is built on a foundation of development, care, attention, support, and networking, with a specific focus on empowering youth, enhancing civic engagement, and promoting EU values. A key goal is the establishment of ACTIVE International Cities of Peace, ensuring that there is at least one in every European country.
What we have to do to become ACTIVE?
- Rising Disinformation: The spread of disinformation poses a significant threat to democratic processes and social cohesion. To address this, BEACON SPLASH emphasizes the importance of Equitable Access to Quality Digital and AI Literacy Education. This solution not only combats misinformation but also empowers individuals with the digital skills necessary to navigate complex information landscapes. By investing in infrastructure, teacher training, and culturally relevant curricula, the project aims to bridge the digital divide, particularly for marginalized communities.
(SDG 4: Quality Education) - Youth Engagement: Many young people feel disconnected from civic processes. BEACON SPLASH tackles this issue by providing leadership training and opportunities for active civic engagement. By ensuring equitable access to quality digital education, the project fosters a generation of informed and engaged citizens who can effectively shape their communities and advocate for their rights.
(SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) - Marginalized Groups: Inclusive participation is vital for social harmony. The project specifically focuses on marginalized and vulnerable groups, offering them the support and resources needed to engage in civic activities. By prioritizing equitable access to education, the initiative addresses the barriers these communities face, enabling their full participation in the civic space.
(SDG 10: Reduced Inequality) - Regional Instability: Political and social challenges, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, create instability across Europe. BEACON SPLASH promotes resilience and cooperation among cities by fostering connections that encourage collaborative problem-solving. Ensuring equitable access to education and resources helps stabilize communities and build a foundation for lasting peace.
(SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) - Capacity Building: Civil society organizations often struggle with limited capacity to advocate for rights and democratic values. BEACON SPLASH enhances the skills and resources of these organizations, enabling them to operate effectively. This includes a focus on developing educational programs and resources that cater to diverse learners, further empowering both advocacy groups and the communities they serve.
(SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals) - Networking and Collaboration: Building a robust network of Cities of Peace facilitates the sharing of best practices and collaborative strategies. By integrating access to quality digital education as a core component of the project, cities can collectively address challenges and foster a stronger civic space. This network supports the exchange of educational resources and successful initiatives that bridge the digital divide and promote civic engagement.
